montreal LESBIAN GAY BI TRANS film festival

Brian O’Donnell & Sasha King 2015 United States 88min english

Benny (Matthew Frias) is a typical college freshman at college. When he is badgered into joining a game of mud ball by his best friend, he meets Christopher (Edmund Donovan). Eventually striking up the courage to ask for his number, the two soon start dating and falling for one another. Benny’s overprotective mother continually asks him about their relationship, worried that things are moving too fast and that he will become distracted from his goal of becoming a doctor. When the boys decide to head to Florida on spring break, Christopher learns of Benny’s older brother who died when he was young. As he finds out more, he realises that their families are linked by a secret from years before, one that will test the strength of their relationship. Akron subverts the familiar coming out narrative that is typical of the gay coming-of-age film genre, instead choosing to portray characters as fully formed, confident gay youth. – Clinton Glenn
