Synopsis:

Joey (Lola Kirke) is a small town girl, fresh out of high school and uncertain what to make of her life. While working at the local carnival she encounters Rayna (Breeda Wool, UnReal), a married mother of two who lives on the wrong side of the tracks. A quick fling turns into a much deeper connection and Joey is torn – stay in town and chase after Rayna, hoping to make a life with her at some unknown point in the future, or enlist in the army and escape the trap of small-town life. When Rayna’s husband (Bill Sage) loses his job, she pushes Joey to enlist and make something of her life. However, with Joey away at boot camp, Rayna has a change of heart and takes the leap to tell Joey how she really feels. AWOL evocatively tells the story of an unlikely relationship set in small-town Pennsylvania: where people seldom escape, and dreams give way to the harsh reality of poverty and unhappy marriages. – Clinton Glenn
