William Fairman & Max Goggerty 2016 United Kingdom 88min english

Sex and drugs go hand in hand in London’s gay scene, as a dark and disturbing trend is plaguing the community. Many men are injecting themselves with lethal drugs, such as ketamine, crystal meth and GHB – amongst other concoctions – and going on sex binges that last days. The documentary Chemsex follows the stories of several men who are both past and present addicts in an attempt to understand why this issue has profoundly impacted the gay community in the British capital. It also examines the rise in the number of HIV cases in this community and how the increase may be related to hookup apps – such as Grindr and Scruff – and ‘chemsex.’ Ultimately, Chemsex provides an emotional and raw look into this world – with directors William Fairman and Max Goggerty going to great lengths to portray a community still trying to understand the issue while attempting to both heal and to move forward. – Dave Easey
