One Kiss (Un bacio)

Ivan Cotroneo 2016 Italy 102min italian s.-t.en

This striking film from Italy proves that great things happen when you least expect them. A smart little genre-buster, One Kiss begins as a feisty teen comedy and then moves into new and intriguing turf. Lorenzo (Rimau Ritzberger Grillo) arrives at his new school and foster home simultaneously. He has had a difficult past of broken homes and being queer hasn't made things easier. Luckily, he has extremely supportive foster parents and a new kick ass buddy, Blue (Valentina Romani), who supports his defiance in the face of schoolyard homophobia and his upstart fashion choices. They form a trio with Antonio (Leonardo Pazzagli), one of the school's top jocks. One Kiss feels like a tribute to some of the best independent queer filmmaking of the 80s, a moving feature, beautifully acted and lovingly shot, and one that avoids tidy premises for the messiness that is reality. A film that embraces its outsider status, the complexity and unpredictability of One Kiss makes perfect sense: in a queer world, why should anything seem straight? – Matthew Hays
