Quand on a 17 ans (Being 17)

André Téchiné 2016 France 114min french s.-t.en
Synopsis:

It has been more than two decades since French auteur André Téchiné brought us Wild Reeds, a beautiful and subtle film about young gay men discovering who they are while falling in love. Quand on a 17 ans feels like an updated version, in which the director – and co-writer Celine Sciamma (Tomboy) – explore the fraught relationship between two boys attending high school in a snowy French town. Damien (Kacey Mottet Klein) is a popular boy at school, lovingly cared for by his physician mother (Sandrine Kiberlain). There is one boy at school, Thomas (Corentin Fila), he can't seem to get along with. Their physical fights become so extreme they are both threatened with expulsion. As tensions rise the boys realize the source of their anger with each other. Téchiné allows his story to unfold in delicate pieces, never falling into the screenplay cliches that would undoubtedly mark studio treatments of similar storylines. Quand on a 17 ans again reminds us of the incredible talents of Téchiné, as well as heralding the arrival of Klein and Fila, two major new acting talents. – Matthew Hays
