The Queen of Ireland

Conor Horgan 2016 Ireland 86min english
Synopsis:

Rewind to 2015, and a social revolution was underway in Ireland, as the tiny nation took the issue of gay marriage to the polls, in a popular vote. Uncertainty filled the air, as the country debated whether to give equal rights to all of its citizens, regardless of their sexual orientation. At the helm of this revolution is Panti Bliss, an outspoken and extremely intelligent drag queen who spurs the nationwide debate by giving an infamous speech that goes viral. The Queen of Ireland follows the journey of Rory O’Neill and his drag alter ego Panti, as they challenge the very foundations of a society that didn’t always tolerate homosexuality. The stellar film is directed by Conor Horgan and perfectly captures the essence of the nation, as it teeters on the brink of social change. It also addresses the haunting stories of past oppression and violence towards the homosexual community, demonstrating that life was always challenging for the gay community. – Dave Easey
