Transit Havana

Daniel Abma 2016 Germany 88min spanish s.-t.en

Welcome to the island nation of Cuba, where we find a marginalized community of transgendered individuals. Every year, a group of doctors from Belgium and the Netherlands fly to Havana to perform five gender reassignment surgeries, and also to teach Cuban doctors how to perform these procedures. This means getting the opportunity for gender reassignment surgery is extremely difficult, and Transit Havana follows the journeys of Odette, Juani and Malú as they each vie for their chances of getting a coveted operation. The film also explores Cuba’s new sexual revolution lead by Mariela Castro Espín, the niece of Fidel Castro, who serves as the director of the Cuban National Center for Sex Education. Mariela is pushing for LGBTQ rights and visibility within her country, and shows how the socialist government is trying to support these communities rather than ostracize them. Transit Havana not only delivers these heartwarming and beautiful stories, but it also takes a candid snapshot of Cuban culture and society, as the country hinges on the cusp of change. – David Easey
